Oakland Police to Send Honor Guard to Lakewood Funeral

The Oakland Police Department (of Oakland, California) know what it's like to lose four police officers in one day.  In March of this year four Oakland Police officers were similarly gunned down by a black convict on parole.  The convict opened fire on two officers on motorcycles.  He then killed two other police officers while barricaded in an apartment building.

The perp, 26 year old Lovelle Mixon, was a criminal with a long record who was already in violation of his parole for assault with a deadly weapon.  Mixon was killed in the shoot-out with police, saving the State of California the expense of having to try him and execute him.

On March 27, the Oakland Police had a funeral for its four officers.  I wrote about it here and here.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that the Oakland Police will send an honor guard to attend the funeral of the Lakewood Police officers.  Ironically, Brad Carpenter, the CEO of Forza's Coffee, served as a beat officer for the Oakland Police Department in the 1980's.  The four Lakewood Police officers were killed in a Forza's coffee shop.

Forza's Coffee is collecting donations for the slain officers' families.  Go here to donate.

Chelsea Clinton to Wed Marc Mezvinsky (Photos)

Apparently, Chelsea likes 'em scruffy.  It was announced today that  she is formally engaged to long-time boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky.  I was unable to find a photo of Mezvinsky with a shave.

How are ya fixed for blades, Marc?

According to online reports, Marc Mezvinsky is an investment banker for Goldman Sachs and the son of a former Democrat Iowa congressman and ex-felon, Edward Mezvinsky, and former NBC reporter Marjorie Margolies.

Edward Mezvinsky was involved in a number of scams and frauds in the 1980's.  One prosecutor called him "a one man crime wave." Mezvinsky was sentenced to 80 months in prison for mail fraud, wire fraud and other crimes.  He has since been released.  Marc is not responsible for the antics of his crazy papa.

Marc's mom is Marjorie Margolies Mezvinsky.  She served one term as a Democrat Congressman from Pennsylvania.

Whoops - wait a minute.  I found one!  Marc with a shave!

Cop Killer Suspect is Shot, Still at Large in Seattle

News reports indicate the killer of four cops in Tacoma yesterday may have been wounded before he left Forza's coffee shop.  It is reported that two of the officers were shot in the head before they could react; one got to his feet but was shot before he could pull his gun; and the fourth struggled with the perp and got a shot off before being killed.  This scenario has not been confirmed and rumor sometimes passes for news before all facts are known.  I hope that one of the cops shot the SOB, however.

Maurice Clemmons, the suspect in the case, continues to evade capture.  Clemmons is looking more and more guilty of the crime, an impression heightened by his flight from the police.  Earlier, ABC had a report that friends of Clemmons kept him overnight after the shooting, and told police that Clemmons had been gut shot.  If true, that would confirm the report that one of the cops got off a shot off before being killed. ABC seems to have withdrawn the story so I can't link to it.

Earlier today cops surrounded a house in Seattle where Clemmons was thought to be holed up, but later found he was not there.  Police reported that there is evidence that Clemmons was there earlier, and that he had been shot.  The UK Times Online gives greater details and says Clemmons may be dead from his gunshot wound.

Clemmons flight from the police indicates he is conscious of his guilt.  Meanwhile, the reward for information leading to his capture has been raised to $125,000.

Since Mike Huckabee commuted this criminal's prison sentence and released him from jail, Huckabee's political career would appear to be over.  Huckabee, however, has never been my choice for the Republican nomination.  One more RINO shoots himself in the foot -- and good riddance.  It's a shame that four innocent cops had to pay for Huckabee's misplaced "compassion."

Ex-Con Maurice Clemmons Sought for Questioning in Murders of Lakewood Police Officers

Maurice Clemmons has a long criminal record in both Arkansas and Washington state and was released on bail just six days ago.  He lives and works in Tacoma, Washington, the city where four police officers were slain this morning.

Clemmons's history is one of an erratic, unpredictable criminal with a slippery grasp on reality.   One of the most startling aspects of his record is that he was serving a 60 year prison term in Arkansas, but had his sentence commuted by then Governor Mike Huckabee.  During the last presidential primaries, Huckabee's detractors pointed him out as a liberal Republican; this would tend to confirm that impression.

The Seattle Times says this about Clemmons:
Although Clemmons was judged competent to stand trial in Washington after a mental evaluation, he has a long history of mentally suspect behavior. A sheriff's report uncovered by KOMO, Clemmons' sister told police,
Maurice is not in his right mind and did not know how he could react when contacted by Law Enforcement...She stated that he was saying that the secret service was coming to get him because he had written a letter to the President. She stated his behavior has become unpredictable and erratic. She suspects he is having a mental breakdown.
Clemmons is 5'8", 235 lbs, with black hair, brown eyes, and a mole on his left cheek. He is considered extremely dangerous. Again, if you have any information about his whereabouts, please call the Sheriff's Department Tip Line, 1-866-977-2362.
Read the Seattle Times story here.

It is to be noted that Maurice Clemmons is only a person of interest in this case, he is not a suspect (yet).  Update:  Clemmons is now wanted for murder and is officially a suspect in the case.  A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Four Police Officers Murdered in Coffee Shop in Washington State

This morning four police officers for the city of Lakewood, Washington were murdered in cold blood.  The police officers, three men and one woman, were sitting in a Tacoma coffee shop before the start of their shift.  They were having coffee, doing paperwork and reading their laptops when the perpetrator entered the coffee shop and opened fire, killing all four.  The scene of the crime was Forza Coffee shop at 11401 Steele Street South, Tacoma, Washington 98499.  (Apparently, the coffee shop is located in an unincorporated area known as Parkland.)

The coffee shop is right on the edge of McChord Air Force Base (see map).  The coffee shop in Tacoma is only 3 miles from the Lakewood Police Department, a 7 minute drive.  Lakewood is a separate city adjacent to Tacoma.

Per witness reports, the punk escaped on foot.  He is described as a black man with scruffy facial hair, in his 20's or 30's, 5'7" to 5'10", wearing a black coat and blue jeans.
There is a $10,000 reward offered for information that leads to the killer. Call the Lakewood Police if you have any information about this crime: (253) 830-5000. You may also email  them at: policefrontdesk@cityoflakewood.us.
If you live in the area, keep your eyes open for someone matching the above description.

Discussion:  Since the sole perpetrator was a young man, I am wondering about his motives.  There was no apparent motive for the attack; the perp seemed to just want to kill cops in general.  Some possibilities:  he was undergoing a gang initiation; he was just plain nuts, or he was a Muslim terrorist.  Was he really an American black man, as witnesses have described him, or was he of middle eastern descent?

The only Muslim organization I can find nearby is just ten miles from the coffee shop.  This is not to imply any connection, but the possibility of a connection ought to be on any police short list.  Could this have been a Fort Hood copycat crime?  The crime was committed right next to a U.S. air base -- could the perp have been a terrorist looking for military personnel to kill, and finding none, decided on the police officers instead?

Swiss Ban Minarets on Mosques

In a surprising European slap at Islamization, the Swiss have voted overwhelmingly to ban new construction of minarets on mosques.  Minarets are those missile shaped structures that generally surround the main building and resemble a watch tower.  To me, a mosque with minarets resembles a giant octopus that is flipping us off.

A Swiss coalition forced the vote through a referendum.  According to Reuters:
A group of politicians from the SVP, the country's biggest party, and the Federal Democratic Union gathered enough signatures to force the referendum on the initiative which opposes the "Islamization of Switzerland."
This is good news.  It demonstrates an awakening among some Europeans of the cultural risks of allowing large numbers of Muslims into their country, not to mention the dangers of terrorism and subversion.

Walter Wobman, chairman of the initiative committee, explained:
"We just want to stop further Islamization in Switzerland, I mean political Islam. People may practice their religion, that is no problem."
"We want to stop the further developments -- minarets ... Sharia law," the SVP parliamentarian said. "The minaret is the power symbol of political Islam and Sharia law."

Hebrews 12: 1-12: Florida QB Tim Tebow Quotes Scripture in His Eye Black

Florida football fans:  looking for Hebrews 12: 1- 12?
From Google:
It’s no secret that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is a devout Christian. One way that Tim Tebow expresses his spirituality is by wearing eye black with Bible passages written on them. During the Nov. 28 Florida vs Florida State game, Tim Tebow wore eye black with the message ‘Heb 12 1-2″ on them.
So what does Heb 12 1-2 mean? It appears to be a reference to Hebrews 12 1-2.
Hebrews 12:1-12 (New International Version)
God Disciplines His Sons
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."[a]
7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTO! Tiger Woods at Emergency Room Entrance!

We were given this exclusive photo of Tiger Woods at the hospital emergency room entrance.  This was following a suspicious arrangement of a golf club over his cranium, courtesy of his wife, following revelations of Tiger's affair with another woman.

Reports from the scene say the 7 iron was successfully removed from Tiger's head.  He will recover.  However, he will have to replace that 7 iron, which appears beyond repair.

We are unable to vouch for the authenticity of this photograph.  Use at your own risk.

Tiger Woods: Cheating Ain't Worth It (Pictures of Wife and Girlfriend)

Early this morning Tiger Woods ran over a fire hydrant on his property in Florida and then crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a tree.

At first everyone was concerned that the popular golfer had an unfortunate accident.  Now, however, the talk is taking another direction:  that Woods crashed into a tree at 2 AM because his wife was chasing him with a golf club.

Medical experts are now measuring the badly bent shaft of the golf club found at the scene to see if it fits the silhouette of Tiger's head.  Ostensibly, Mrs. Tiger Woods used the club to break out the rear window of the Escalade to free Tiger after his accident.  However, there is now speculation that she broke out the rear window with the aim of making contact with Tiger's skull.

But why the lovers' spat?  Ask the National Enquirer, the dirty tabloid newspaper that runs stories about Elvis marrying Bigfoot in a UFO.  Sometimes, however, they do get the story right:  the Monica Lewinsky scandal was one of those times.  Now the Enquirer is reporting that Tiger Woods has been having an affair with a blonde socialite named Rachel Uchitel.  Uchitel is pretty, for sure, but Mrs. Woods ain't no slouch either.

The top pic is of Tiger Woods, his wife and baby. That's Rachel Uchitel in the bottom photo. I suppose that fame and fortune and a bevy of willing beauties would tempt most men, but it isn't worth it, Tiger.  Keep your lovely wife and family.  Stay away from temptresses like Rachel Uchitel.  Otherwise, your wife will divorce you and take your fortune with her.  As the old song goes,
I'd better keep her
It's so much cheaper
Than makin' whoopee.

Rod Stewart explains it all in the video embedded below.

The So-Called RNC "Litmus" Test for Republican Candidates

I heard Fox News pundits arguing today over a proposed "Republican Litmus Test" for Republican candidates for office.  Presumably, the RNC would not fund candidates who do not meet 7 of 10 defined principles.

The only source I could immediately find online that deals with the list of 10 was from Alex Knapp from Outside the Beltway.  Alex Knapp is obviously a liberal (only a liberal would disingenously argue that Cap and Trade is a market solution rather than a tax).  However, if Knapp's list of principles is accurate, then some of the items on the list are certainly less than perfect.  The items refer to specific legislation now being debated, but should instead refer to broader principles.

Knapp lists the "litmus test" points as follows, with my suggestions for changes.  The words crossed out are in the original list, the blue text is how I would change it:

(1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill;  new or expanded entitlement programs and supporting the phase-out or privatization of existing ones, and by supporting energy self-sufficiency and economic growth;
(2) We support market-based health care reform, via tort reform and removal of barriers to interstate medical insurance competition, and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare; socialized medicine or federal takeover of the the health care industry;
(3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation; through increased domestic drilling, clean coal, oil shale reclamation, the building of nuclear power plants and additional oil refineries; we oppose tax and other regulatory schemes that suppress energy independence, including those based on unproven and dubious theories such as man-made global warming;
(4) We support workers’ rights to secret ballot by opposing card check; to ensure worker decisions regarding union membership or union policies truly reflect the will of the workers by protecting them from union pressure and intimidation;
(5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants and by effectively policing our national borders;
(6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges; our military through adequate funding, research and development of new weapons systems that will reduce military fatalities in war, and by avoiding military involvement for the purpose of nation building;
7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea rogue nations who support spreading their ideologies through military force or terrorism, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;
(8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;  We support the Tenth Amendment and oppose federal intervention into areas not authorized by the Constitution, leaving those areas to the decisions of the individual states, e.g. marriage and abortion;
(9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and  (This is already covered by items 2 & 8)
10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership, except those pertaining to ex-felons or the mentally ill;

That's my take on it.  What's yours?

President George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness :”
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted’ for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Islam's Hatred of Women: Terrorism That's Personal

All Eyes of Tampa Bay.Com has some truly disturbing photos of Muslim women who were disfigured by Muslim men, mostly by throwing acid in their faces.  Most of the men who perpetrated these atrocities were rejected suitors.

Yes, I am Islamophobic.  And proud of it.

Debbie Schlussel Shakes Things Up: Single Moms in the Military

Debbie Schlussel is a conservative pundit, lawyer, film critic and a proud Jew.  She recently caused a stir by saying that single mothers shouldn't be allowed to serve in the military.  I agree.  According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
Conservative pundit Debbie Schlussel recently called for a ban on single mothers in the military because they are "useless soldierettes" and their absence is harmful to their children, she said. Schlussel said deploying single moms "exacts more costs and bureaucratic BS than it's worth."
She points to the case of Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, the Oakland, Calif., Army cook who was arrested because she refused to deploy with her unit once her child care arrangements fell through. Hutchinson's attorney said officers advised the single mom to place her 10-month-old son in foster care while she was deployed. The Army has not confirmed that statement.

Adam Lambert Blows It at the American Music Awards

Adam Lambert was the runner-up in the last season of "American Idol," one of my favorite shows.  Lambert is a guy with Elvis good looks and a great voice.  He's from San Diego and obviously gay.  As a male heterosexual, this seems to be an ironic twist of fate.  Here's a guy who could have an unlimited supply of beautiful women, but he doesn't want them.

Lambert was by far the best singer last season.  He lost to a lesser talent because of his flamboyant displays of his sexual orientation.  The winner, whose name I have already forgotten, was a handsome guy with boy-next-door looks and values.  America went for him because the American Idol prize doesn't always go to the best talent.  It goes to the best talent that America feels most comfortable with.  Lambert's performance on the American Music Awards (AMA) this past week proved that America made the right choice.  Lambert is a great talent but clearly out there on the fringe somewhere.

Lambert's AMA performance was way over the edge.  During his singing/dancing routine he grabbed a woman dancer's crotch, shared a long mouth-kiss with his male keyboardist, led some guy around the stage on a leash, and grabbed another guy's head and shoved it into his crotch.  I'm sure hard core, gung-ho gays everywhere loved it.  Unfortunately for Lambert, if he wants to be a megastar, he must appeal to more than just gays.  Many, and probably most, heterosexuals feel uncomfortable with public displays of intimacy between gays, however broad-minded they may be about gays in general.  ABC immediately cancelled Lambert's scheduled appearance on Good Morning America.

So methinks Adam Lambert blew it at the AMA.  No pun intended.  See more about this at the Fox News Site here.

The video below shows Lambert's performance on the CBS Early Morning Show, subsequent to his AMA disaster.

AGW Alarmists: "Time is Running Out" Despite Ten Years of Cooling

We're DOOOOMED!  In spite of ten years of cooling temperatures, short and mild summers, long and colder winters, greater snowfalls, etc, man made global warming will soon kill us all!

That's according to 26 AGW scientists from eight countries, who say that global warming is accelerating, not slowing or stopping, that sea ice is melting faster than a snowball in Hell.

Don't believe it.  You would think these "scientists" would be embarrassed to release this alarmist dung just after fraud was uncovered among leading AGW scientists, fraud designed to hide contrary evidence that refutes their alarmist nonsense.  It is to be noted that the mainstream media will publish the most recent, alarmist, doomsday propaganda from the AGW "scientists" but will not publish the recent accounts of their fraud.  However, others are speaking out.  Robert Tracinski writes:
These [hacked] e-mails show, among many other things, private admissions of doubt or scientific weakness in the global warming theory. In acknowledging that global temperatures have actually declined for the past decade, one scientist asks, "where the heck is global warming?... The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't." They still can't account for it; see a new article in Der Spiegel: "Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out." I don't know where these people got their scientific education, but where I come from, if your theory can't predict or explain the observed facts, it's wrong.
The Washington Times, however, is an exception to the mainstrem media's blackout.  In an editorial titled "Hiding Evidence of Global Cooling," They write:
We don't condone e-mail theft by hackers, though these e-mails were covered by Britain's Freedom of Information Act and should have been released. The content of these e-mails raises extremely serious questions that could end the academic careers of many prominent professors. Academics who have purposely hidden data, destroyed information and doctored their results have committed scientific fraud. We can only hope respected academic institutions such as Pennsylvania State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst conduct proper investigative inquiries.
Most important, however, these revelations of fudged science should have a cooling effect on global-warming hysteria and the panicked policies that are being pushed forward to address the unproven theory.

South Park -- a Leftward Tilt?

The Other McCain today has a post about South Park's latest episode, featuring Eric Cartman singing his lamentations over the rising tide of immigrant minorities to the United States.  I watched the episode over the weekend at the South Park website.  I have noticed that South Park appears to be titling leftward politically over the past few episodes.  This is after years of tilting right -- there was even a book a few years back about "South Park Conservatives."

First some background.  I love South Park and have watched every episode since its inception in 1996 (you can watch all of them at the link above).  South Park is often great for laughs when one is fed up with all the serious negativity in the news.  The show features four eight year old boys, Eric Cartman, who is fat, intelligent but bigoted, manipulative and selfish; Kyle Broflovski, the intelligent and moral Jewish kid, his best friend "every man" Stan Marsh, and the poor kid, Kenny McCormick.  There are other characters too, like Butters Stotch, and Stan's girlfriend Wendy Testaburger, but the first four are the main characters.

South Park is highly irreverent and insults anyone and everyone, whether they be politicians, egotistical celebrities or religious personalities.  It has lampooned Jennifer Lopez, Barbara Streisand, Scientology, the Mormon religion, Osama Bin Laden, Tom Cruise and many others.  Some notable examples:
Episode 1006 lampoons Al Gore's eco-alarmism in an issue called "ManBearPig," a mythical creature that Gore is sure is wandering the world and attacking humans without cause.
Episode 1109 has men attempting to break the world's record for taking the biggest crap.  Craps are measured in units of weight known as "Katy Courics," or simply "Courics" for short.
Most of the episodes, however, are mostly just for fun, though they may (or may not) contain some moral point or lesson.  Often the theme is merely to satirize artistic mediocrity, as in the last "Indiana Jones" movie or the films of comedian Rob Schneider.

In late 2009 the episodes seem be taking a leftward tilt.  In Episode 1314, Cartman's racist song "My Water Park" is extraneous to the plot and is pasted on for no apparent purpose, other than to establish the broad-minded credentials of  the South Park writers.  The song highlights the "hateful attitudes" of undefined racists.  However, there is no point to the song as it isn't used to advance the plot or provide an epiphany, i.e. a "lesson learned" insight.

Prior 2009 episodes that seem to tilt leftward are these:
1311 - Stan leads the movement to fight the Japanese slaughter of whales and dolphins; he learns why the Japanese are so malevolent to whales and dolphins, and persuades them to cease this slaughter and substitute the slaughter of cows and chickens instead.  "Now they are just like us!"  PETA will like this epsiode.
1313 - Eric Cartman becomes the new morning announcer at South Park Elementary School, reading the school's news announcements, lunch menu, sports activities, etc.  However, Eric always takes his assigned role way too far.  He begins dressing in a suit and tie and starts denouncing the student body president, Wendy Testaburger, for being a tool of socialists and an oppressor of the Smurfs, and either incompetent, immoral or corrupt, and probably all three.  Cartman even writes his own book where he says he is "just asking questions," so as to avoid legal liability for the smears.  One scene shows him with light hair, a touch of gray at the temples, wearing a light blue tie and looking intently into the camera with tears in his eyes as he laments the ruination of his school by its student body president.  It's pretty obvious that Eric is supposed to represent Glenn Beck.
However, episode 1313 has a mixed theme, portraying Wendy Testaburger as a Sarah Palin figure who is finally hounded out of office.  She resigns as president of the student body, and writes her own book, "Going Rogue on the Smurfs."  Perhaps the true purpose of episode 1313 is to lampoon political demogoguery, whether it be from the left or the right.
I think it is unlikely that South Park will go too far left. If they do, they will surely hear about it.

Cold Weather Saturday: Cigars, News, Views and Blues

Hmm, it's Saturday. It's cold (48 degrees) outside. I have a good stash of cigars.  So I will go outside, light one up and study my tax course, which I really need to finish.

There is no breaking news that requires my expert opinions today.  However, you may find my discussion with reader Wyandotte interesting, at this article regarding Robert Stacy McCain.  I thought we were approaching a healthy meeting of the minds when Wyandotte suddenly went hostile after I asked her if she were associated with the blog Little Green Footballs.  I assume that I must have stepped on the truth, otherwise, a simple denial would have been sufficient.

My son Dooj is in the area to attend a funeral of one of his cousins, a wife and mother who died in Indiana last week of the H1N1 virus.  Of course, her husband's brutality may have been a contributing factor, as the coroner reported that, besides the flu, the woman had a broken arm, two chipped teeth and multiple bruises throughout her body.  She went to sleep on her living room couch and died during the night.  Her body was shipped to Gilroy, California so her parents could bury it in her hometown.  The funeral is next Tuesday.

I haven't seen my niece by my first marriage in many years so I won't be going to the funeral -- it's complicated, with all of those former in-laws and my ex-wife.  However, I have prayed for my niece and will continue to do so.

I am still trying to become the next great jazz bassist.  I'd be satisfied with a Blue Brothers style gig playing Rawhide in some dangerous honky-tonk, safe from thrown beer bottles behind a mesh screen.

Maybe I will take a Zen approach:  to learn the bass, be the bass.  If that doesn't work I may have to resort to actual practice.  Just kidding.  I have been practicing.

I've had a good week with my upright bass.  My playing fingers have grown strong and dexterous and I feel my confidence growing.  That big long ebony neck has become a familiar place.

I am learning to read notes with a play-along book.  I also challenge my ear by playing along to Diana Krall jazz.  I tried it with Norah Jones but after my third suicide attempt in 20 minutes, decided that Jones' music is too damned sad and depressing for me.

Well I have coffee to drink, cigars to smoke and naps to take, and I'm way behind schedule.  Have a great Saturday.

Computer Hacker Exposes Global Warming Hoax

The UK Telegraph has a fascinating story today.  Apparently a computer hacker broke into a University's computer system and released 61 megabytes of data onto the internet.  That includes confidential emails between AGW scientists, onto the internet.  This evidence suggests that global warming scientists have been involved in fraud to slant evidence in favor of their theories, destroy contrary evidence and punish dissenters in the scientific community.  In other words, those of us who have long believed that Anthropogenic (man made) Global Warming is a fraud were right all along.

 The UK Telegraph article says:
These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory – suggest:
Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.
The author of this article says the data shows the AGW proponents:
  • Manipulating evidence (to "prove" AGW)
  • Suppressing contrary evidence (deleting email discussions in that vein)
  • Slanting contrary evidence in order to invalidate it (the Medieval Warming Period)
  • Squeezing dissenting scientists out of the peer review process (removing dissenters from the discussion rather than refuting them)
If this data is true, it may finally drive a stake through the heart of the man made global warming scam.  However, don't expect the AGW controversy to die overnight.  The UK Telegraph author, James Delingpole, writes:
The world is currently cooling; electorates are increasingly reluctant to support eco-policies leading to more oppressive regulation, higher taxes and higher utility bills; the tide is turning against Al Gore’s Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. The so-called “sceptical” view is now also the majority view.
Unfortunately, we’ve a long, long way to go before the public mood (and scientific truth) is reflected by our policy makers. There are too many vested interests in AGW, with far too much to lose either in terms of reputation or money, for this to end without a bitter fight.
Delingpole misses one of the most obvious vested interests:  political power and "socialism through other means."  The most immediate implications of this disclosure is that Obama's Cap and Trade scheme and the Copenhagen Climate Treaty are proven unnecessary.

The article is titled Climategate:  the final nail in the coffin of "Anthropogenic Global Warming"?

Vince Guaraldi, Famous Jazz Pianist: More Information Comes to Light

Back in February of this year I wrote a post about my trip to Menlo Park to find the site of Butterfield's Nightclub, where Vince Guaraldi (jazz musician whose trio added theme music to Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" cartoons) died on February 6, 1976.  I found what I believed to be the building that once housed Butterfield's.

Just today I discovered that someone who lives in Menlo Park read that post.  It turns out she was a patron of Butterfield's and often went there to listen to the Vince Guaraldi trio.  She confirmed that the building I identified was indeed the site of Butterfield's Nightclub, where Guaraldi played his last gig.  Further, she gives some fascinating descriptions of Butterfield's interior, which was pretty impressive.

I added her commentary to the article.  I wish I had seen it earlier.  Read it at this link if you are interested.

Obama on Stimulus Data Errors: "Accounting is an Inexact Science"

Fox News reports:
President Obama brushed off criticism over his administration's inaccurate reporting on job creation Wednesday, telling Fox News the accounting is an "inexact science" and that any errors are a "side issue" when compared with the goal of turning the economy around. He said job growth is his No.1 responsibility.
Well as an accountant, I can confirm that it is true:  accounting is an inexact science.  Unfortunately for Ken Lay, the court didn't accept that as a valid excuse for the massive Enron fraud.  Nevertheless, it's true.  So when it turns out that government run health care is not "deficit neutral" but actually breaks the bank, well, refer to the accounting truism noted above.

There are some interesting implications of this theorem of accounting inexactitude.  Here are some practical applications of this rule:  "Accounting is an Inexact Science."

1.  The IRS audits you and finds out you substantially understated your taxable income.  What is your excuse?  Refer to the theorem.

2. You retire as trustee of your company's pension fund and take a healthy percentage of the fund with you to the Bahamas.  When the cops show up at your door, yep, just recite the accounting theorem of inexactitude.

3.  You are a mechanic and you tell a customer that his car repair will cost $500.  When it's finished, you give him a bill for $2,500.  When the customer screams, you gently remind him that "accounting in an inexact science."

Yes, as an accountant, I can tell you that accounting is an inexact science.  But not THAT inexact, for pete's sake.

The Outting of Robert Stacy McCain: White Supremacist or Object of Smear?

The Left really hates Sarah Palin and will do whatever it takes to poison the well of public opinion.  So they are now trying to affix in the minds of the public some sort of connection of Palin with "racism."  It is complete bull shit, of course.

The connection they are trying to make is that Palin's ghost writer for "Going Rogue," one Lynn Vincent, also co-authored a book with Robert Stacy McCain called "Donkey Cons," a book about corruption in the Democratic Party.  They are saying that McCain is a racist and that Vincent is therefore tainted with McCain's views, and therefore the book "Going Rogue" is suspect, as is Sarah Palin.

However, as one who actually observed McCain over a decade ago, arguing against racism and white supremacy, I know that the charges against McCain are irresponsible, unfounded smear.

I have written another rebuttal of these smears based on my actual, direct knowledge of McCain.  I fear I may have embarrassed him in the process, as I have outted him as a broad-minded, racially tolerant, decent man.  He is not now, nor has he ever been, a racist or white supremacist.

As Palin moves toward a possible presidential run in 2012, the Left will revisit these smears in an effort to discredit Palin indirectly.  Therefore, I have to speak out because Sarah Palin's potential candidacy is more important than even my friend Stacy McCain or his "notorious" reputation.

Please feel free to link to my rebuttal when these false charges reappear -- and they will. The link is here.

Ben Smith at Politico Libels Robert S. McCain

Ben Smith of Politico, who obviously panders in unfounded rumor and libel, wrote this about Stacy McCain:
Max Blumenthal goes after Sarah Palin's co-author, Lynn Vincent, in a broadside that focuses largely on her 2006 collaboration with a conservative blogger, Robert Stacy McCain, whose views on race . . . have since made him a pariah even on the right.
I have thoroughly rebutted this smear more than once, but I will do so again.  Robert Stacy McCain has no suspect views on race.  He never has.

One of the most oft-cited sources for this big lie is that Stacy contributed commentary to a white supremacist site, "Reclaiming the South," which is no longer online.  Stacy did not contribute to this site, this site merely appropriated Stacy's arguments in favor of racial equality.  I know, because the white supremacist in question also appropriated my arguments for racial equality and did the same thing to me.  The original debate was from a private listserv; all the white supremacist did was copy and paste the text to his website.  He was so proud of his arguments that he wanted to share them with other white supremacists.

Funny, the racist site disappeared after I contacted the owner and asked that he remove my real name from his website, as I feared people googling my name would draw the wrong conclusions, i.e. that I agreed with his racial views. Indeed, this is exactly what happened to Stacy McCain.  People with an agenda now want to associate McCain with this racist site EVEN THOUGH
  • R.S. McCain's arguments were copied from elsewhere and pasted to the racist site without Stacy's permission, and
  • McCain's arguments were IN OPPOSITION to racism and white supremacy, not in favor of them.
This was back around 1995.  I remember it well.  Although there were several of us arguing against racism and white supremacy, I thought Robert Stacy McCain actually held the most liberal views on race of our group.  He even used Stephen Jay Gould's arguments to rebut the book The Bell Curve.  Personally, I thought Stephen Jay Gould something of an idiot and suspected McCain to be a closet liberal by the fact he cited Gould.  However, my suspicions have since been laid to rest by Stacy's recent comments, i.e.:
I believe that liberals are wrong about black people. Liberals are also wrong about white people, brown people, yellow people and red people. If NASA announced tomorrow that it had discovered a distant planet inhabited by purple people, anything that liberals believed about purple people would be wrong, too. Liberals are not only wrong about race, but they are also wrong about economics, crime, poverty, religion, science, war, marriage and foreign policy. In fact, as evidenced by their global-warming hysteria, liberals are wrong about the weather. Insofar as there is a "liberal consensus" on any particular subject -- including movies and sports -- then the truth is likely to be the exact opposite of whatever liberals say.
During that long-ago debate on race, I distinctly remember McCain stating that his religious beliefs in Christianity made it impossible for him to accept the notion of black inferiority.  If ever there were a good and decent man unfairly slandered by liberal/left chicanery, it is the unfair racism charges against Robert Stacy McCain.

Stacy, I would like to offer a belated apology for thinking you might be a closet liberal.  However, I will not apologize for outting you as a decent man, your outrageous reputation notwithstanding.

A Day Off From Blogging: Taxes and Playing the Upright Bass

I took the day off from blogging.  I used the time to finish another major section of a tax course.

Lately I have been paying more attention to my upright string bass, or double bass, or contrabass, or doghouse, or bass fiddle; there are many terms for this instrument.  I prefer the term string bass, but upright bass is probably the most popular term.

Whenever I enter my music room upstairs, the first thing I notice is the scent of the bass's spirit varnish.  It smells good.  I see my bass sitting upright on its stand, tall, dark brown, chrome keys reflecting the light from the window.  The bass looks so...dignified, sedate, sober and serious.  If it could speak it would be have an English accent and would say, "Very good sir, don't even THINK about any 'rock-a-billy' or 'slap bass' on THIS instrument or I'll call the bobbies on you!"

I almost feel as if I should put on a tie just to practice.  But Mr. Bass has let that slide...so far.

I have never been interested in learning to use a bow on a bass.  My interest has been solely on the plucking side of things, what bassists call "pizzicato," or "pizz" for short.  That means plucking the strings with your fingers.  Playing with a bow (called "arco"), as is done on a violin or cello, is also common in orchestras and it does sound very good if you know how to do it.

I have a bow, so I decided to try it out.  The wife thought I was torturing the cat.  Not as easy as it looks.  But I put some more rosin on my bow and tried again and it sounded a bit better.  I'll keep at it.

Three for Glenn Beck: Adrienne, Clifton and Maria

I swiped this photo from Another Black Conservative. It shows three blogger friends who were on the Glenn Beck show last Friday. They are from left to right, Adrienne Ross (a fervent Sarah Palin supporter) of Motivation Truth, Clifton of Another Black Conservative, and Maria (also known as Namaste) from My Voice on the Wings of Change.

Adrienne, Clifton and Maria:  we are very proud of you all!

Read Maria's latest post:  "A Conservative Kick-Ass Chick Like Me."

"Crooks and Liars" Leftist Blog Disses Black Conservatives on Glenn Beck

One of the most odious, mendacious and leftwing blogs on the net is the appropriately named "Crooks and Liars."  David Neiwert of Crooks and Liars (or as I prefer to call them, "Crooks, Liars and Cowards") uses tortured logic to explain away the black conservatives on Beck's show last week.  In the process, he implies that Sarah Palin is a racist, that white people are not allowed to quote Martin Luther King, and that white people invented the N word to insult black people.

I need not rebut Neiwert here; that has been done already by Another Black Conservative, Left Coast Rebel and No Sheeples Here (see links below).  I will, however, address one of his misstatements of fact, the origin of the N word.  Neiwert writes:
Moreover, it wasn't black people who invented the "N word" or the segregation from enjoying the full fruits of American citizenship it represented -- it was white people. "African American" represents the recognition of their dignity and their rights as Americans.
Neiwert is wrong.  The N word was not invented by white people to insult black people; it simply evolved from the latin word niger, which means black. Originally, the word was used in a neutral context to refer to black people and was not intended to be an insult.  The word was used by black people themselves as a self-referential term, in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was not considered to be a pejorative term by the black populace of those times (who used the word heavily), but it subsequently became one when used by racists as a term of contempt.  Note that the Oxford English Reference Dictionary states:
Among Anglophones, the word was not always considered derogatory, because it then denoted “black-skinned”, a common Anglophone usage. Nineteenth-century English (language) literature features usages of [the word] without racist connotation. [For example the works of Mark Twain.]
Neiwert says Beck should study history.  I say someone as ignorant and uninformed as Neiwert shouldn't lecture anyone on what they ought to study.

Furthermore, the term "African-American" is divisive and subtly racist in its own right, as it verbally segregates black people and over emphasizes who their ancestors were and not who they are in the here and now.  I, for example, do not call myself a "European-American" as I do not identify with Europe.  Many black people feel the same way about the term "African-American."  They do not identify with Africa.

I am reminded of Sidney Poitier's 1967 performance, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?"  Poitier's character tells his father:  "You are my father.  I love you.  I always have.  But you see yourself as a colored man and I see myself as just a man."  Apparently, Neiwert agrees with the father.

Left Coast Rebel also has videos of Beck's show so you can watch it and draw your own conclusions.

Scientists Want to Know: Is There Water in Tehran?

A few weeks ago NASA bombed the moon to see how much water would be present in the dust kicked up by the blast.  Some wags stated that the USA had declared war on the moon with a preemptive attack, and that Harry Reid immediately declared the war lost.

Now it appears that the test showed there is indeed water on the moon.  Why this is important isn't immediately obvious to me.

I know a lot of scientists, particularly Israeli ones, who are anxious to test for water in Tehran.

The Election of Barack Obama, Reconsidered One Year Later

I created this graphic a year ago this month, expressing my feeling of disaster at the election of Barack Obama. I have not changed my opinion -- that Obama's election was a cataclysmic event for American freedom, security, prosperity and sovereignty.   I copied the idea (from memory) from the ending scene in one of the Plant of the Apes films.  Moonbattery has run the original scene, below.

Carrie Prejean's Sex Tapes (Yawn)

So Carrie Prejean made a sex tape for her boyfriend back when she was 17.  Except now the boyfriend said she made about twenty tapes and she was actually 19 when she made them.

Prejean became a darling of the right a few months ago when she told a beauty contest judge that she didn't approve of gay marriage.  This really ticked off the judge, one Perez Hilton, a guy who's so gay that he even makes gays feel uncomfortable.  So there was a big controversy; Carrie wasn't politically correct, she didn't verbalize the standard talking points for the political left and for Hollyweird and, horror of horrors, cited her faith in Jesus Christ as a reason.  We just can't allow anyone who isn't a doctrinaire leftist to be Miss California.

They couldn't fire her for her "intolerance" so they found some racy photos of her and used that as an excuse instead.  Prejean then sued the Miss California Pageant; their lawyers produced the teen sex tapes (to further prove Miss Prejean's lack of modesty) and the lawsuit was suddenly settled out of court.

Well I agree with Prejean about the gay marriage deal; I don't like it, but, realistically, it will happen sooner or later.  What I really dislike even more than gay marriage is people asking questions about it during beauty contests.  No matter what the contestant says, she is going to really annoy a lot of people.  Another thing I don't like in my Christian conservative poster girls is one who makes sex tapes.  No, I don't want to look at them.  She's too young, too blonde, too skinny and those false boobs make her look like someone shot her in the back with a couple of torpedoes.

In any case, I am sick of hearing about Carrie Prejean.  She is no angel, that's for sure and certainly no poster girl for conservatives.

The Fighting Sullivans: WWII Sailor Brothers Who Died Together

There is a lot of interest right now in the "fighting Sullivans," five brothers who served together in the US Navy in World War II.

Apparently, and foolishly, they were all allowed to serve together on the same ship, the USS Juneau, a light cruiser that was sunk during the Battle of  Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942 --  67 years ago yesterday.  Putting one's eggs in only one basket proved catastrophic for the Sullivan family.  In fact, their loss was the greatest military loss for any one family in World War II.

The US Navy currently has a guided missile destroyer named after these brothers, the USS The Sullivans (DDG 68).  You can see a photo of that ship at this link.  This is the second ship named after the Sullivans; the first was a Fletcher class destroyer (DD 537); this latter ship was decommissioned in 1965 and still serves as a museum that is open to the public.  Read all about it at this link.

The photo at the right shows all five of the Sullivan brothers in uniform.  They are wearing the blue "Donald Duck" style Navy hats that were phased out in 1963.  Too bad; I like those hats, having collected about six of them from EBay.  I sometimes wear one when puffing stogies in the backyard gazebo.

I previously wrote about this Navy hat here.

Black Conservatives on Glenn Beck: Holding High Freedom's Torch!

Yesterday Glenn Beck devoted his Fox television show to black conservatives.  Some of our friends were there, notably Clifton and Maria.  Beck had surgery just a week before and was still in a lot of pain, so he changed the format for this one show.  Beck normally divides the audience on either side of him and then walks among the members of the audience, talking to many at random.  For this show, he remained seated in front of the audience to deal with the pain.  For that reason, our friends did not get any chance to comment or speak.  Beck, however, told the audience he wanted them all to come back for a future show.

The show was nevertheless inspirational.  There was a mayor of a town who said he didn't want to be thought of as "a black mayor," but merely a mayor.  A young man, perhaps of college age, talked about American Exceptionalism and opportunity and less government (he sounded just like me!).  I never thought I would see the day -- but I am so glad I did.

Several others spoke on similar themes.  These Americans were sincere about a post-racial society, of wanting to get beyond race as either a crutch or a weapon.  One young woman complained about all of the forms (for employment, for school admissions, etc) that ask applicants to describe their race.  She thought that question should be removed.

It was very comforting to see a whole room full of black conservatives, some of them sounding like fire-breathers (like me).  Perhaps the growing black conservative movement will someday reach critical mass and have a significant part in propelling this nation back towards its founding principles.  God bless them all!

Associated Press Tries to Discredit Palin's New Book

The Associated Press is decidedly leftwing, as anyone well knows who has followed the news for years.  I don't recall them "fact checking" any of Obama's ghost-written books, or Kerry's, or Gore's; but maybe I just missed them.  In any case, a team of AP journalists are poring over every page of "Going Rogue" by Sarah Palin.  Surprise, surprise, they have found errors, noting that "Palin has gone rogue on some of the facts."

Well that sounds pretty scary all right.  Did Palin lie about important events or facts?  Well no.  The AP has only uncovered "errors" in immaterial facts (some of which aren't errors at all, but merely differences of opinion), none that would change either Palin's argument or undermine her credibility.  However, they're hoping you'll just read the headline and carry away the false impression it was designed to create.  Kathy Shaidle at Frontpage's Newsreal says this:
One man decoded the Rosetta Stone. Two guys with manual typewriters waded through “Watergate”. But today, it apparently takes eleven “reporters” to read a book (“It was hardcover!”), unearth “errors” that aren’t very important and in some cases aren’t even “errors”, then write a 700-word article about their epoch-making discoveries.
It should be noted that virtually every book that is published contains some errors.  Publishing houses have editors and fact-checkers who pore over the book before publication, and they find most of the errors, but not all.  Many if not most of the AP's efforts above were to argue with Palin about "who cares" topics, like the types of hotels she stayed in during the presidential campaign -- really important stuff, to be sure.

The Left's War on Conservative Commentators: the Screwing of Lou Dobbs

The Left hates conservative commentators.  They can't refute them (at least not without misrepresenting their positions) so they have to get rid of them altogether.  Such was the case of Lou Dobbs this past week, when he suddenly resigned as CNN's lone conservative commentator.

Accuracy in Media (AIM) tells how far left groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center and La Raza have been urging CNN for months to cut Dobbs loose.  Indeed, I was aware of the efforts of the Southern Poverty Libel Center, a distinctly totalitarian group if ever there was one.  Perhaps Lou Dobbs will follow another former CNN pundit, one Glenn Beck, over to Fox where his input will be appreciated.  Meanwhile, CNN's tiny audience continues to shrink as conservatives lose their last reason for watching that leftist network.

The Other Hasan on the Army's Death Row

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Army will seek the death penalty for the accused Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan.  If convicted, Hasan will join fellow Muslim on death row at Fort Leavenworth, one Hasan Akbar.

Akbar murdered two fellow soldiers in Kuwait just before the outset of the Iraq war by rolling a grenade into an army tent filled with sleeping soldiers.

Akbar was a convert to Islam and said he did it to prevent the soldiers from killing Muslims in Iraq.  He was court martialed in 2005 and sentenced to die.  However, at the rate by which the military executes murderers, he may die of old age before his execution.

There are currently five men on Leavenworth's death row; Nidal Hassan will make six if he is sentenced to die.

Feds Seek to Seize Four U.S. Mosques: But What About Our Diversity?

From the AP:
NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors Thursday took steps to seize four U.S. mosques and a Fifth Avenue skyscraper owned by a nonprofit Muslim organization long suspected of being secretly controlled by the Iranian government.
In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets of the Alavi Foundation and an alleged front company.
The assets include Islamic centers in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston, more than 100 acres in Virginia, and a 36-story office tower in New York.

My comments:  Imagine that, the Federal Government seizing mosques and a skyscraper that belongs to Muslims!   It's about time the Feds woke up:  SEDITION in the name of religion is still SEDITION and the perpetrators should not be allowed to hide behind their cloaks and pulpits.

World Council of Moonbat Churches to Ring Bells to Warn of Climate Change

According to an article in Breitbart, the World Council of Churches will ring their church bells to show their concern for global warming.  On December 13, during the Copenhagen summit on climate change, they will ring their bells 350 times:
"By sounding their bells or other instruments 350 times, participating churches will symbolise the 350 parts per million that mark the safe upper limit for CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere according to many scientists," it added.
This is nonsense.  According to the authors of the book SuperFreakonomics, CO2 concentrations were 1,000 parts per million (ppm) some 80 million years ago, back when many mammals were appearing. Since CO2 is good for plants, most commercial hyrophonic greenhouses have supplemental CO2 at about 1,400 ppm.  By contrast, our current atmospheric concentration of CO2 is only 380 ppm.

Further, CO2's effect on the temperature is minimal to begin with and cutting concentrations by 30 ppm (down from our current levels of 380 ppm) would have no discernible effect.

However, it is totally appropriate that liberal churches ring their bells for global warming -- since the latter is more of a religious faith than a fact.

Nadil Hasan to be Charged with Thirteen Counts of Premeditated Murder

Nadil Hasan, the suspected Fort Hood mass murderer who killed 12 soldiers and one civilian last week, will be charged with thirteen counts of premeditated murder, according to MSNBC.

The MSNBC article then feigns ignorance as to why Hasan carried out the horrific crime, naming several possible causes, none of which include being a Muslim fanatic.

The Army will try Hasan in a military court and may consider the death penalty.  For my money, why would they consider anything else?

Obama Needs to Lead, Follow or Get the Hell Out of the Way

There is an old army dictum that says one should "lead, follow or get the hell out of the way."  President Barack Obama has chosen not to do any of the three with regard to the war in Afghanistan.

The news story from Fox is captioned "Obama Rejects All Afghan War Options."

Obama's irresponsibility and incompetence are breathtaking.  He should resign the presidency.

Joe Lieberman Moves Right

Joe Lieberman, Senator from Connecticut and a former Democrat, became an independent when his party booted him out for his views on Iraq.  So much for the Democrat "Big Tent."  Joe then ran for reelection as an independent, defeating the party-approved Democrat, and won.

Now Joe is saying that the public option in health insurance reform would be bad for the country and that he will filibuster the bill when it arrives in the Senate.  He said:
“People, I think, who really want a single-payer system and government control of health insurance are using the public option as a nose under the tent, a camel’s nose under the tent,” he said, adding that, “they’ve got a right to that point of view – I think they’re wrong and I think it would be terrible for the country and for health care, so I’ve got to stop it.”
