When I was growing up, there was a wild persimmon tree in the woods belonging to our neighbor. He didn't like persimmons, so I had permission to harvest. But I always had to beat the opossums to the persimmons, which fell on the ground after the first hard frost.
AOW, yes we have a persimmon tree, and the fruit is sweet and delicious. Funny, it only produces fruit every other year, but 2011 is one of the years. Possums don't attack the fruit, but birds sometimes ruin a few.
You can buy persimmons at Safeway, but they cost around $1.45 each.
