Confederate Kristallnacht

In November 1938, Jews were attacked throughout Germany in an event known as Kristallnacht, or Night of Broken Glass.  Jewish shop windows were broken, Synagogues trashed or burned, private homes ransacked, and people were murdered.  Oppression of Jews had been occurring in Germany for some time, but up until Kristallnacht, it had been nonviolent. Kristallnacht was the turning point from nonviolence to violence.  The safety of Jews in Germany went rapidly downhill from there.

For the past couple of years we have been witnessing our own cultural and ethnic cleansing, in what many are calling "Confederate Kristallnacht."  Confederate flags, Confederate monuments, any public depiction of a Confederate general or hero, all are being savagely repressed.  Monuments and statues are vandalized with paint and graffiti, and one was even torn down by a mob.  Even graveyards are not safe, as one had tombstones toppled and broken, and another had bodies dug up and the bones scattered.

The Washington National Cathedral will remove images of Lee and Stonewall Jackson from its stained glass windows this week, as the madness continues to spread.

What we are witnessing is a kind of hysteria, wherein differing opinions on history are not tolerated, and those who hold differing views are to be shamed, ostracized, even physically punished with beatings in the public square.  Comparing this outpouring of hate to Kristallnacht is not at all far-fetched.  Verbal insults have morphed into physical destruction and physical assaults.  When will the shooting start?

Don't reject the analogy of Kristallnacht out of hand.  Both involved irrational hatred of a scapegoat, expressed in violence and destruction.  The Confederate South has been an American scapegoat for years:  a scapegoat for slavery mainly, but also for modern day civil rights issues.

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield woman is Black and proud to display the Confederate flag. The Virginia Flagger is speaking out and challenging stereotypes.

"I'm sick and tired of my White Christian southern friends being attacked," said Karen Cooper. "People displaying a flag is not a problem."

She's outraged over the Confederate battle flag being taken down after 9 South Carolina church members were murdered at the hands of Dylann Roof, often pictured holding the flag.

"They are trying to pin the murder of 9 people on a flag," said Cooper. "This is an inanimate object. It is right here. It is not harming me. It's not calling me bad names. It's not telling me to go kill people."

Cooper rejects the suggestion the flag is a symbol of racism or defenders of slavery.

"That is to say that I support the Confederacy," said Cooper. "I actually believe in my heart that they were good men."

Karen says Confederate soldiers fought for state's rights. She says it was not about slavery. 

"'State's rights means my rights....White's rights...over yours,'" said former Richmond city councilman Marty Jewell of the message sent by Confederate flaggers. "And if anybody can come up with another descriptive I'll eat their hat. The forces waving that flag are always happy to find a fool...a fool who will say what they won't say themselves but has a Black face."

Jewell says he feels sorry for Cooper. 

"The poor thing," said Jewell. " We pray for her."

Cooper says she is accustomed to being called names. 

"That's okay. I will fight for your freedom to call me names," said Cooper. "That's what the First Amendment is all about. God forbid they make it a law, and I can't wear this. That's when I'm going to jail, and I'm going to be back in chains like my ancestors." 

Cooper says she plans to be buried with the Confederate flag.

Former NAACP president H.K. Edgerton also defended the Confederate flag after protesters spray-painted "Black Lives Matter" on a Confederate monument in Asheville, North Carolina.

The House bill would outlaw the display of any Confederate flag on our soldier's graves in certain national battlefield parks.  The Senate proposal would reduce the amount of federal highway funds given to any state which issues specialty license plates displaying our flag.  Both of these bills face uphill battles to be enacted, but the fact that either of them have been proposed and are actually being considered should be alarming.  Follow the links below for more specific information on the status of these proposals. It is suggested that our membership needs to "carpet bomb" our various representatives in Congress -- particularly southern Republicans -- with emails, phone calls, and letters expressing our outrage at these proposals.  Further, those of you who plan to attend the upcoming national reunion in Richmond should, if possible, plan a side trip to Washington and pay a personal call on your representatives.  Well spoken words conveyed in person can have a disproportionally large effect.  It's time to step up, and do your part! Walmart to Melt All Class Rings With Confederate Flags

The anti-flag hysteria continues.  BOYCOTT WALMART!

This just in from Fox News:

An Arkansas woman who went to pick up the class ring she ordered from Walmart left disappointed, after store officials told her the retailer's new policy barred them from turning the item over -- because it bore an image of the Confederate flag.

Elaine Glidewell told KFSM someone from the store in Fort Smith called her to pick up the ring she'd ordered for her nephew, but when she arrived on Tuesday, a clerk told her she couldn’t have it. The ring had been ordered before Walmart stopped selling items bearing images of the flag, in the wake of controversy that stemmed from a racially-charged shooting in South Carolina.

“I wanted to cry,” Glidewell told KFSM, adding that the store clerk said the ring would be "melted."
