Hysterical Laughter at the Ice-Bound Global Warming Believers

The global warming fanatics made fools of themselves lately, and it does my heart good.  A bunch of them took a passenger ship to the antarctic to view the melting ice shelf caused by our boiling temperatures that are caused by man-made global warming.  What they saw instead was a massive ice buildup caused by blizzard conditions.  Their ship, the Russian vessel Akademic Shokalskiy, became ice-bound and couldn't move.  A Chinese ice breaker attempted rescue, but it too became ice-bound and unable to move  So the climate scientists froze their buns off from Christmas day to January 2nd, when they were finally rescued by a helicopter.

Omigod! National Geographic Warns of Rising Sea Levels Disaster! #climatechange

A couple of days ago I went to the dentist, and while waiting my turn in the chair, picked up a copy of the latest issue of National Geographic (see image on right).  I was disgusted with the alarmist article about how "fossil fuels" are causing sea levels to rise at an incredibly fast rate, threatening coastline communities and soon to drown us all.

The cover of this issue shows an absurd depiction of the Statue of Liberty waist-deep in the mythical rising sea.  Another website, C3, states that the current rise of sea levels is 2.77 millimeters per year.  At that rate (assuming it never stops or reverses), it will take 23,500 years before the seal level reaches Lady Liberty's waistline.

However, a newer study, the Grace study, has revised that prediction downward, stating that the sea level rise is only 1.7 millimeters per year, or about 6.7 inches per century.  Over the past seven years, the rise has only been 1.1 to 1.3 millimeters per year, or 5 inches per century:

The paper corroborates the NOAA 2012 Sea Level Budget which finds sea levels have risen at only 1.1-1.3 mm/yr over the past 7 years from 2005-2012 [less than 5 inches/century], and the paper of Chambers et al finding “sea level has been rising on average by 1.7 mm/year over the last 110 years.”

The conclusions are obvious:  National Geographic is now in the propaganda business of junk science, and is not to be take seriously on the question of climate change.

Scientists Who Dispute Man-Made Climate Change

Climate Depot is a climate related blog that I have linked to for a couple of years, but rarely read.  That's because the "global warming" controversy just isn't as sexy or as immediate as other current events.  Also, the climate controversy requires one to read graphs, study technical terms, and follow meandering scientific claims and counterclaims.  Since Barack Obama is now using the global warming fraud to once again undermine the economy, reading Climate Depot and related blogs (like Real Science) is now a priority.

What is a "Climatologist"? Answer: a Recently Invented Job Title and Degree, Not a Science

In the ever evolving scam of anthropogenic global warming (now called "climate change" due to an absence of global warming), alarmists attack the opinions of any scientist who is not specifically a "climatologist."  This is a recurrent theme in alarmist propaganda as to why any dissenting scientist has no credibility.

So the Petition Project, which documents the dissent of over 30,000 scientists (over 9,000 of whom are PhD's), is meaningless...because physics, biology, chemistry, and even meteorology are not "climate change science" and therefore these scientists' opinions hold no weight.

This is undoubtedly the chief logical fallacy pushed by the warmists, i.e. an appeal to authority.  If some guy with a degree in "climatology" says man made global warming is happening on a large scale, than by god, it is and you can't possibly disagree.  Here's why that is B.S.:  if someone has a higher degree in math, and they say "2 + 2 = 5", you must accept what they say, because they have the degree and you don't.  This is especially true where the mathematician's conclusions are "peer reviewed."  That means another mathematician,  who is also receiving big bucks from the government to arrive at the desired conclusion, has reviewed your work.  Bingo!  2 + 2 = 5.

A climatologist is basically anyone with a degree in any number of sciences, who has used computer modeling to predict the weather or who has studied past weather patterns.  Big whoopee.  Here is an article from the Examiner.  Note:  it is four years old and since it was published, a number of "climatology" degree programs have been cobbled together by various universities.  However, it is still of value in spiking the warmist logical fallacy of "appeal to authority."

The Brazen Dishonesty of Global Warming Advocates

We are always hearing stories of how every climate scientist in the world is a passionate believer in man-made global warming, and how we are doomed, dooomed, doooooooomed unless we institute a form of totalitarianism to deal with it.

Okay, so I exaggerated, but not by much.  The latest massive B.S. broadside by the neo-Bolsheviks is that a full 97% of climate scientists believe in man made global warming.  For example, here is the Washington Post's claim:

97 percent of scientific studies agree on manmade global warming, so what now?  A new study confirms there is strong scientific consensus that human activities are causing the planet to warm. 97 percent of scientific papers (that take a stance on the issue) agree, the study finds.

However, the Post's statement above is total B.S.  The survey, taken by a biased warmist website, consisted of a question allegedly put to approximately 12,000 climate scientists who had written scientific papers on the subject.  James M. Taylor, managing editor of Environment & Climate News, writes:

As is the case with other ‘surveys’ alleging an overwhelming scientific consensus on global warming, the question surveyed did not address the issues of contention between global warming alarmists and skeptics. The question Cook and his colleagues surveyed was simply whether humans have caused some global warming. Most skeptics, like most alarmists, believe humans have caused some global warming. The issue dividing the two is whether humans are causing a global warming crisis demanding concerted action.

In other words, the study misclassified as warming-alarmists those who believe man's contribution to global warming, though real, is negligible and nothing to worry about.

Cook and colleagues further skewed the results of the study by falsely classifying skeptic papers as "taking no position" on AGW.  For example:

Morner, a sea level scientist, told Popular Technology Cook classifying one of his papers as “no position” was “Certainly not correct and certainly misleading. The paper is strongly against AGW [anthropogenic global warming], and documents its absence in the sea level observational facts. Also, it invalidates the mode of sea level handling by the IPCC.”

With such biased polling and classifying, it is no wonder that the Cook survey concluded that "97% of climate scientists believe that humans are causing global warming," a ridiculous, unsupported conclusion indeed.

"Eco-Tyranny" by Brian Sussman: Major Goals of the Left in Exploiting Environmental Issues

Brian Sussman, a very good guy in the San Francisco Bay Area, has written a new book on climate change and the global warming hoax.  His first book was "Climategate," a useful tome for putting the whole controversy into perspective and rebutting the alarmist claims and arguments.

"Eco-Tyranny:  How the Left's Green Agenda Will Dismantle America" goes further and delves into the left's use of environmentalism to construct massive wealth-redistribution schemes, to weaken or even destroy property rights, undermine the sovereignty of the United States, and justify massive power grabs by the federal government.

Sussman's book is helping me to better understand the long-held goals and strategies of the radical left, and I will soon write an article that lists them and explains them.  In a nutshell, however, those goals are (1) a one-world government where all countries are taxed and regulated by an international order, and (2) massive wealth redistribution from the industrialized nations to the underdeveloped ones, and massive wealth redistribution within nations from rich to poor.

In other words, the perennial goal of the left is international socialism.  Environmental issues are just the excuse, the rationalization, the Shtick, the latest scheme by which socialism is to be accomplished.

These goals, if realized, will mean that Americans will experience a major reduction in their standard of living, and will be forced to live the lifestyle beloved by the left:  smaller families, smaller homes, fewer modern conveniences, less personal choice, fewer opportunities.

Climate Dupe Plans "Civil Disobedience" in Washington, D.C.

From the very leftwing U.K. Guardian, we learn that "climate scientist" Jason Box plans to get arrested in Washington soon.  As the Guardian states:

His natural inquisitiveness — plus a dose of idealism and commitment — is why Box is intent on participating in his first-ever act of civil disobedience. The cause? Trying to convince President Obama that approving the extension of a controversial oil sands pipeline — the proposed $7 billion, 1,702-mile Keystone XL — would be the equivalent of lighting a fuse to the biggest carbon bomb on the planet.

Hey Jason, wake up.  The "global warming" hoax is over.  You lost.  As for the Guardian's transparently flattering description of Box, "natually inquisitive, idealism and commitment," I would add:  naive, credulous, lacking a healthy dose of skepticism for climate disaster scenarios, prone to accept politically motivated scientific theories without any substantial basis in fact.

Another Body Blow to the Global Warming Crowd

For a long time now, the anthropogenic global warming crowd has been telling us to ignore our lying eyes and believe their computer models instead.  A new NASA report shows those computer models have been wrong.  They are wrong in that they posit a much larger entrapment of heat in earth's atmosphere than actually exists.  Satellite data over a decade shows that a lot more heat is escaping into space than the computer models predicted.

James M. Taylor is senior fellow for environment policy at The Heartland Institute and managing editor of Environment & Climate News.   He explains the findings of this new study:

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth's atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.

Study co-author Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on NASA's Aqua satellite, reports that real-world data from NASA's Terra satellite contradict multiple assumptions fed into alarmist computer models.

When I read Brian Sussman's book "Climategate," he stated that for decades scientists have been measuring the earth's temperatures with earth-bound measuring stations throughout the globe, and that these stations produce a lot of inaccurate data.  Sussman claimed that satellites from space could measure the earth's temperatures with far greater accuracy, and that global warming would be disproved when enough satellite data became available.  He was right.

Some pundits are saying that this new report is the death knell for the global warming movement. Let's hope so.  The left will have to invent a new fraud to accomplish "socialism by other means."

More Backlash Against the "Global Warming" Alarmists

Disgust among the populace seems to be growing as AGW alarmists blame the freezing weather on "global warming."  There's a new article on the subject in Forbes today, "Hot Sensations vs Cold Facts" by Larry Bell.  According to Bell, some of the claims of melting icebergs and rising sea levels are not based on actual observation, but on the notorious computer models that have proven highly dubious.

With the right "computer model," one could "prove" that the sky is falling.  It's all in the programming and the assumptions fed into it.  However, any contrary news that seems to rebut global warming is ignored by the mainstream press.  Bell writes:

As 2010 draws to a close, do you remember hearing any good news from the mainstream media about climate? Like maybe a headline proclaiming "Record Low 2009 and 2010 Cyclonic Activity Reported: Global Warming Theorists Perplexed"? Or "NASA Studies Report Oceans Entering New Cooling Phase: Alarmists Fear Climate Science Budgets in Peril"? Or even anything bad that isn't blamed on anthropogenic (man-made) global warming--of course other than what is attributed to George W. Bush? (Conveniently, the term "AGW" covers both.)

Meanwhile, a British meteorologist and global warming skeptic, one Piers Corbyn, went on Fox News to claim that more brutal winters are coming.  Corbyn denounced the "failed science" of global warming and says the earth is actually in a cooling phase.  An article in Mediaite states:

Predicting in November that winter in Europe would be “exceptionally cold and snowy, like Hell frozen over at times,” Corbyn suggested we should sooner prepare for another Ice Age than worry about global warming. Corbyn believed global warming “is complete nonsense, it’s fiction, it comes from a cult ideology. There’s no science in there, no facts to back [it] up.” Furthermore, he disputed the underlying assumption of most scientists, arguing that higher carbon dioxide levels does not actually have the effect of increasing temperature, and instead global warming supporters “fiddle the facts to justify political attacks.”

Investors Business Daily has a great article today, "The Abiding Faith of Warm-Ongers."  They write:

No matter what happens, it always confirms their basic premise that the world is getting hotter. The weather turns cold and wet? It's global warming, they say. Weather turns hot? Global warming. No change? Global warming. More hurricanes? Global warming. No hurricanes? You guessed it.

IBD has it right.  There is no truth but that which furthers the revolution.  All weather patterns and climate phenomena must be interpreted as "global warming."

The new meme out of the climate-statists is that the freezing weather is just a by-product of global warming.  It changes nothing in their view:  we must have a one-world government and it must have far-reaching power over industry, the private sector and the citizenry.  Individual freedom, capitalism and prosperity all must be sacrificed to save the world from the impending doom of man-made global warming.  Whether the impending doom actually exists or not is irrelevant.  It is the goal that is important; AGW is just the latest excuse.

Freezing Weather is Proof of Global Warming. Also, Up is Down and Left is Right.

Viscount Christopher Monckton of Brenchley, a member of the British upper class, speaks common sense to the Global Warming eco-freaks for whom logic and common sense are non-entities.  Monckton attended the "Global Warming" conference in Cancun, in the middle of a historically cold winter and snowstorm, and was told he would be allowed to attend as long as he raised no points from the floor.  Only the true-believers of APG would be allowed to ask questions.

The Viscount writes:

The climate bugaboo, the strangest intellectual aberration of our age, rampages because in the me and now we have cast aside three once-universal forms of learning that gave us perspective: a Classical education, to remind us that in reason and logic there is a difference between true and false; a scientific education, to show us which is which; and a religious education, to teach us why the distinction matters.

With perspective, no one would waste a single second of his own time or a red cent of other people’s money trying, Canute-like, to make “global warming” go away.

Well said, Viscount!  I have been skirmishing with Global Warming eco-Marxists at a British online newspaper site, and their arguments consist of some combination of the following:

1.  You're not a scientist so you are not allowed to disagree.
2.  You're either stupid or a tool of the petrochemical industry.
3.  Facts in the books you've read that rebut global warming may not be considered because:

• a.  The author is stupid
• b.  The author is a tool of the petrochemical industry.

In no case are any facts presented by the warming true-believers, just a lot of ad hominem attacks and personal insults.  One gets the impression that a belief in man-made global warming is not so much a philosophy as it is a bad attitude.

Physics Professor at UC Santa Barbara calls Global Warming a "Pseudoscientific Fraud"

Harold Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He recently submitted his resignation letter to Curtis G. Callan Jr, Princeton University, President of the American Physical Society.  Lewis cites fraud and corruption in the global warming scam as the reasons for his departure.  He writes:

How different it is now. The giants [of Physics] no longer walk the earth, and the money flood has become the raison d’être of much physics research, the vital sustenance of much more, and it provides the support for untold numbers of professional jobs. For reasons that will soon become clear my former pride at being an APS Fellow all these years has been turned into shame, and I am forced, with no pleasure at all, to offer you my resignation from the Society.

It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare. (Montford’s book organizes the facts very well.) I don’t believe that any real physicist, nay scientist, can read that stuff without revulsion. I would almost make that revulsion a definition of the word scientist.

Professor Lewis's letter goes on in great detail, and later includes this statement:

In the interim the ClimateGate scandal broke into the news, and the machinations of the principal alarmists were revealed to the world. It was a fraud on a scale I have never seen, and I lack the words to describe its enormity. Effect on the APS position: none. None at all. This is not science; other forces are at work.

Lewis's public resignation is a potent torpedo into the global warming scam.  The pseudoscientific community will respond, of course, by slandering his reputation and ostracizing him.  They've got a lucrative thing going and, like the crooked cops in "Serpico," they simply won't tolerate any whistle-blowers.

Investigatory Panel Finds "Little Evidence for IPCC Claims About Global Warming"

From the U.K. Daily Express:

THE world’s leading climate change body has been accused of losing credibility after a damning report into its research practices.

A high-level inquiry into the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found there was “little evidence” for its claims about global warming.

It also said the panel had emphasised the negative impacts of climate change and made “substantive findings” based on little proof.

The review by the InterAcademy Council (IAC) was launched after the IPCC’s hugely embarrassing 2007 benchmark climate change report, which contained exaggerated and false claims that Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035.

The panel was forced to admit its key claim in support of global warming was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed by research.

SETTLED SCIENCE: Betrayal of the scientific method for politics or money or both.

DENIER: Anyone who suspects the truth.

CLIMATE CHANGE: What has been happening for billions of years, but should now be flogged to produce 'panic for profit.'

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE: Leftist Nutcase Prize, unrelated to "Peace" in any meaningful way.

DATA, EVIDENCE: Unnecessary details. If anyone asks for this, see "DENIER," above.

Moscow's "Worst Heat" in 1,000 Years (BS Warning)

I don't know why Drudge, a conservative, always pushes stories that seem to support "global warming," but he has another one up today:  "Muscovites Flee Worst Heat in 1,000 Years;  Death Rate Doubles."  Thousands of Muscovites are fleeing the city "to beat the heat."

The story's title is not supported by the news story itself.  There is no mention of how anyone determined this is the "worst heat in 1,000 years," a pretty neat trick since the mercury thermometer wasn't even invented until 1714, though there are complicated ways to estimate prior temperatures, e.g. boring trees and analyzing tree rings, taking ice core samples, etc.

And what is this terrible heat?  35.5° C, which translates to 95.9° F.  That's a fairly normal temperature for summertime across the USA, especially in August, so what's the big deal?  On July 29, Moscow experienced its "highest temperature ever" ("ever" is not defined, but records go back to 1879), 38.2° C, or 101° F.  Again, 101 isn't an extraordinary temperature, though it is higher than Moscow's usual summer temperatures, which often top 86 °F.  Of course, usual temperatures are not affected by extensive wild fires as is the case today.

The real reason the death rate has doubled in Moscow, to 700 per day, is that the city's air pollution is horrible, with high levels of carbon monoxide and smoke from extensive wild fires.  That is also the real reason so many are fleeing the city:  smoke is hard to breathe.

These dramatic headlines are part of the global warming agenda of big, liberal newspaper chains:  to insinuate into the public mind that earth temperatures are soaring, so people can remember man-made global warming hysteria, put 2 and 2 together and get 5.  We are being programmed.

Global Warming Hyperbole: Brian Sussman to the Rescue

I have ordered Brian Sussman's book, "Climategate."  Sussman is a former meteorologist and TV weatherman, now a conservative talk show host for KSFO out of San Francisco.  Sussman is passionate about anthropogenic (man made) global warming.  Passionate in that he believes it is a fraud.

A climate change believer named Sven has been arguing with me in my former post about L.A. temperatures being the lowest in years.  He also disputes the fact that the earth is cooling, as it has been for at least eight years.

In spite of all the hot weather of late, according to NOAA 62% of the continental U.S. had below normal temperatures January-July 2010 link

         Total global polar sea ice extent is largely unchanged over the past 30 years

*When adding the sea ice volumes at both poles there is about the same ice as 30 years ago link. Antarctica has 90% of the world's ice and had the most sea ice ever recorded at the end of 2008, over one million square kilometers above the average maximum.  The global sea ice extent today (combined sea ice at both Poles) is nearly the same as the average of the last 30 years according to NASA and NSIDC link link View today's Antarctic sea ice extent compared to the 1979-2007 average (National Snow and Ice Data Center)link link  While it is true Arctic sea ice volumes have been overall slightly less today than the average of the last 30 years the ice there has been growing the past several years and as of mid September 2009 there was 24% more ice than just two years earlier, which is over 1 million square kilometers of new ice since 2007. There is also substantially more multi year ice in the Arctic in 2009 than just one year earlier link Antarctic sea ice extent in September 2009 is also growing and is 1 million square kilometers more than the previous year. In 2009 the Antarctic had the most Summer ice ever recorded link. The 2010 Arctic sea ice melt has started later than at any time ever recorded.                                           Ocean temperatures are cooling

*NSIDC/NASA AMSR-E also shows that the overall trend of ocean temperatures since 2002 is one of cooling in spite of a recent short lived El Nino warming event link

                      There are fewer violent storms. Storm intensity is in decline

*Violent tornadoes are in decline in the US link. The global death rate from extreme events are in decline link. US landfall hurricanes are less numerous and powerful than decades ago link. Global hurricane, typhoon, and cyclone activity are nearing 50 year lows according to Florida State University link link

                                Polar Bear populations are of record size

Some say Polar Bears are threatened but there are more polar bears today than ever recorded, an increase of 300%+  since the 1950s. link  link  The scientific name for Polar bears is Ursus Maritimus, which means sea bear. Polar Bears are excellent swimmers and can swim 200 miles or more link. Polar bears have survived  periods when the Arctic melted completely in the past.

          There is lower Solar activity. This has led to cooler temperatures in the past

So what has changed? CO2 concentrations continue to increase yet temperatures have been falling since 2002? It is believed by some scientists that lower solar activity increases cloud formation and this has a cooling effect.  If the past is a predictor of the future, these changes in solar activity will cause a 30 year period of cooling temperatures on earth and in fact it appears that this has already begun. Europe, North America and many other areas of the Earth have recently experienced a score of unusually low temperatures. So where is the global warming that we are  preparing for?

Is a carbon cap and trade system that would raise hundreds of billions of dollars each year for the government necessary if in fact the slightly warmer temperatures of 1978-1998 were caused by natural forces such as the Sun's increased activity in that period, and that many scientists are now becoming skeptical of the theory of man made global warming (AGW)? link  It appears to me that this is looking more and more like the Y2K scare of the late 1990s.
