Okay, two years have passed and I have learned a few Photoshop tricks since then. So I decided to try once again to do Seaman Richard Carroll justice. I think I did so in this second effort, and it only took me one day to complete. [Update: I spent a second, third and fourth day colorizing it and making small edits.] Here it is:

Hey, no foolin', that's pretty good reconstruction work. I'll have to give some of that a try some day.
What's the first step? A photoshop filter to reduce the graininess? I use teh Gimp, so I've no access to any specific 'photoshop' filters. But there's probably a crossover look-alike that'll get it done.
You should post a photoshop tutorial, using that image with a step-by-step progression to the final result.
