Karl Malden has died at the age of 97, his family announced Wednesday in Los Angeles.
After starting his career in the theater, he acted in several dozen films, including "A Streetcar Named Desire," "On the Waterfront," "The Conquest of the West" and "The Kid from Cincinnatti."
Awarded an Oscar for his role of Mitch in "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1951, Karl Malden went on to an equally successful career in television. He was especially noted for his role of Lieutenant Mike Stone in the 1970's television series "The Streets of San Francisco," which co-starred Michael Douglas.
Stogie's Note: When "Streets of San Francisco" was popular, I was living in San Francisco. I always liked Karl Malden -- he seemed so real and down to earth. I especially liked the character Mike Stone, whose favorite dish was chili. Mine too.
