Today is the 38th anniversary of the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. She died through the negligence and abandonment of Senator Ted Kennedy on July 18, 1969.
Mary Jo was a Democratic Party campaign staffer who caught a ride with Ted Kennedy following a party for the staffers. No doubt old Ted was counting on a little political "activism" and was in a rush to get Mary Jo to a nice bed somewhere. But he drove off a bridge into the bay around Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts. Kennedy extricated himself from the submerged car, but did not seek emergency help to free Mary Jo from the sunken Oldsmobile. Kennedy was more interested in saving his political career than he was in saving Mary Jo's life, and she drowned in the car.
Mary Jo wasn't the only person this fat alcoholic slob ever killed, but she was one of the first. Later, 2.5 million Indochinese joined her in death as a result of Kennedy's cut-and-run policy for South Vietnam.
Still to come: several million Iraqis. Stay tuned.
